2 New Homebrew kegs

The Morley is going HomeBrew style. A quick call to Defalco’s Brew Supplies in little Italy produced 2 used Cornelius kegs. Well used but ready to go. This is an important to “Getting off the Grid” so to speak. A keg of Kilkenny (The favorite of the Morley) costs $235CDN for 50 L, thus a Pint costs $2.35. These kegs hold 19 L but it only costs $20CDN to brew 21 L, do the math .49 cents a Pint. This produces (Not Only a great Brew) but a realized savings of $1.86. Now compare that to the local pub, which sells a pint of Irish beer for $6.05CDN (Plus tax, usually .95 cents) total savings a whopping $6.51. Did I mention it’s only .49 Cents a Pint?

What better to go with two new kegs but two new brews.

Bellow is the labour of 1 hour. Two buckets of brew, the first is an Irish Stout, the Second is Irish Cream ale. What else would you expect? The size of the kegs are key, as you may or may not know I love a pint of Guinness, but that’s it .. 2 pints, and I’m bloated like a dead porpoise. 19L or 38 pints is enough that Leaf Fans and others in the posse can enjoy a Pint of Stout at the Morley, lord knows that a 100 Pint Keg would last for ever.

I'm working on putting in a Bar gun at the Morley

Lindsay Reasoning, 1) Cool factor, 2) reduce recycling, guessed about 15 L of pop goes through the bar per week, 3) I have a spare CO2 tank taking up space, all good reasons!

After reading on slashdot about a guy who created an installation guide, I went to his site and checked it out, everything you need to know about getting a Soda fountain running at home.

Check the link here http://www.boneville.net/soda/

I figured I needed some stuff so I went to Ebay and started shopping.

I'm looking for

  1. Soda Bar Gun
  2. Carbonator
  3. One Soda Pump per soda on the gun (6)
  4. Regulator for the CO2 tank
  5. Cold Plate to chill the carbonated beverage as it comes into the gun

First I bought a gun from EBay, $9.95 USD,,,,, still waiting for it to arrive,

I've also bought 3 pumps from a place in Rochester for $12-$15 USD each, Too bad, I can get them locally cheap, looks like it'll cost about $100 CDN for all three plus shipping, not counting Duty!

Hosted by Auctionworks!

Then I went looking at used restaurant equipment stores. After talking to a beverage distribution center, they told me a few places to look. I showed him a picture of the Ebay special and he informed me that it was a pre-mix gun, and electric at that,,, bad news,,,, I now need to find another post-mix gun

After that he took me to the warehouse and showed me 3 or 4 complete systems lying on the floor (Bastard) over priced, gotta try to keep the Morley spirit alive by finding the cheapest used crap and turn it into something beautiful..

I called one or two places, no luck, then I drove by Kassis on Merivale. He had 3 bar guns, two post mix and 1 pre mix. I chatted him up and managed to walk away with 2 guns, a regulator, 4 pumps and a Carbonator for $200

.

First step was to clean it all up, then start putting it together, by the first night I had it pumping water from a bucket,, ,heh heh , can almost taste the coke now.

You can see the Orange and red syrup still in the Gun,,,,,Peeling back the black cowling reveled some green gunk,,, I took the gun completely apart and cleaned it with Guinness strength Line cleaner,,, came up like new

Then installation of the gun and pumps. Once I get the syrup I'll need to tune the system to pump, 5-1 Carbonated water to Coke and 5.5-1 for Diet, in the picture below you cna see the little white screws above each line that comes in, turning that controls the syrup flow,,,,,,

The Laundry room is looking like a Nuclear Fusion Lab.... Still missing the Boxes of syrup but the connectors on the Left are clean and ready to Go, Initially I'll have 3 pops, Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite, a water button and a carbonated water button, potentially I could run Rye from one of the two front buttons, but still thinking about it, I may just use the first gun I bought to pump Liquor

This Is the finished unit, not bad.....

I needed something to hold the nozzle so I made a lindsay special from ABS pipe and a piece of OAK

Still to come,,,,,,,

The Carbonator is missing some hook up flares,,, I've checked everywhere but no luck,,,, may need to either order them from the Carbonator people in T.O. or do a Lindsay Special!

Syrup, I've got a local connection for boxes, but I'll probably need to call Coke eventually, One box produces about 200L of coke,,, so probably once a month, every 2 months for Diet.

April 27th, 2003

I went back to Kassis and got a second carbonator, and a cold plate Friday morning. The Coke arrived on Thursday! 8)

I cleaned up the new stuff hooked it up and by Friday night we had Coke on button one and Rye on button two.

OLDER NEWS from SeeItAgainForTheFirstTime.com

March 25, 2003.

As you can see below, substantial changes have been made to the Morley. A custom bar rail was ordered from Ottawa Brass and installed. To accomodate the new rail the front of the bar was finished with Oak and stained with Bombay Mahogany 480 to match the well weathered Bar Rail and top.
